Updated proposal now titled “The Arkansas Abortion Amendment”

LITTLE ROCK, AR: This morning an amended draft of “The Arkansas Reproductive Healthcare Amendment,” now titled “The Arkansas Abortion Amendment,”  was submitted to the Office of the Attorney General. Arkansans for Limited Government, the ballot question committee that advocates for the passage of the amendment, collaborated with the drafter for the proposal’s second iteration. The group solicited feedback from both legal and medical experts to carefully consider the concerns Mr. Griffin outlined in his November 28th opinion.

The new version of the amendment addresses each concern expressed in the Attorney General’s opinion; the changes are summarized in the cover letter that was submitted with the updated language. Arkansans for Limited Government reiterates their appreciation of Griffin’s thorough review and expects speedy certification of the revised text from his office. The group also expresses gratitude to those who advised on language and helped craft an updated proposal that is clear for voters.

“We’re confident that the language in this resubmission addresses all of the Attorney General’s concerns as well as input from healthcare providers and seasoned legal minds,” says Jim McHugh, Treasurer of Arkansans for Limited Government. The group expects a response from the Attorney General on or before January 5, 2024.

Restoring personal liberty to Arkansans will require citizens across the state standing together. Arkansans for Limited Government is galvanized by support for the amendment from residents across the state. The group is committed to policy that protects Arkansas women and girls, and keeps private healthcare decisions between patients, their families, and their doctors. Arkansans can pledge to sign the future petition, donate, and sign up to volunteer at arliberty.org.

About Arkansans for Limited Government:  Arkansans for Limited Government believes that when it comes to private healthcare decisions, Arkansans know what is best for themselves and their families. Politicians have taken away the fundamental right to make private healthcare decisions. Instead of letting healthcare experts provide for patients, the government wants to play “doctor.” AFLG advocates for the passage of The Arkansas Abortion Amendment, a proposed constitutional amendment to limit government overreach in private medical decisions and restore access to reproductive healthcare.

AFLG is led by Hershey Garner, MD, JD (Chair), a board-certified physician, attorney, and native Arkansan with nearly 40 years of experience as a medical provider. Jim McHugh, JD, serves as Treasurer and is licensed to practice law in 14 states where he helps families hold nursing homes accountable for neglecting and abusing the elderly. For AR People, a nonprofit grassroots advocacy group that advocates for good governance and forward-thinking policy, serves as an organizational member.
